Bipolar disorder, also called manic-depressive illness or manic depression, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). It typically consists of manic and depressive episodes separated by periods of normal mood. Sometimes they feel very happy and “up,” and are far more energetic and active than usual.
